Raymond Enbody had a rare treat earlier in October when he earned a special lunch with WMU Presdient, Dr. John M. Dunn.

"The lunch with President Dunn was a great experience. It was exciting to talk with him because of his position, "Enbody commented. "He is very down to Earth person and can relate to many of my experiences."

Enbody and another student, Samantha Kulhanek, are the second group of students to meet a challenge—to obtain a cumulative 4.0 GPA for one academic year. Enbody has now met the challenge twice.

Enbody is a junior majoring in Criminal Justice, and Kulhanek is a sophomore majoring in Pre-Nursing.

The TRiO Student Success Program provides services to first-generation, income eligible, and/or disabled students. In the fall of 2010, the program received a renewal of its Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education. In the new grant, at risk populations are challenged with the support of the University.

"I have really enjoyed being a part of Trio. The program directors are great with scheduling events that truly help students with academic success," Enbody said, "Dr. Giscombe is great because she makes herself readily available to students whenever we have problems."

Charlotte Giscombe directs the program, which has been at WMU since 1984… and the program truly is a success. Last year, 61.5% of participants maintained a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. In addition, the program boasted an 89.6% retention rate and a six-year graduation rate, that at 59% exceeds the national graduation rate. 

Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow, who was unable to attend the luncheon, sent a certificate of recognition to both students.
