The Western Michigan University Libraries encompass 4 distinct facilities across campus, and offer more than 5 million print and non-print resources. Access to the libraries is not only for the general public but also for those who contribute to WMU library’s success.
Founded in 1992, the Friends of the University Libraries was established to strengthen and support Western Michigan University Libraries. Becoming a member of the University Libraries offers opportunities for individuals to come together with a common interest for the literary and cultural activities of the Libraries. Members can also assist in special projects and aid in the development of special collections. Donations to Friends of the University Libraries goes to the support of professional and intellectual development of library staff, support the scholarship for library student employees, purchasing materials and equipment for the libraries, and for sponsoring lectures, tours, and other special events.
By joining the Friends of University Libraries, members enjoy a number of benefits including the Friends’ informative newsletters; tax deductions; volunteering within the WMU community of scholars; invitations to all programs, events, and lectures sponsored by the Friends. Each season welcomes two new events for members. For example, speaker Dr. Diane Dillon presents a unique aspect on the Columbian Exposition and an Annual Meeting will offer inside information into the University Libraries with a behind the scenes tour of the new Education Library in the innovative Sangren Hall.
Another benefit of the University Libraries is the Guest Borrowers Program. To receive a Guest Borrowers card, one must be live within a 50-mile radius of Kalamazoo or near a branch campus; be at least 18 years of age; and present a photo ID with address and proof of Social Security number. WMU doctoral program graduates receive a Lifetime Borrower’s card. Members of the Friends of University Library and Alumni are eligible to receive a Guest Borrowers card, which is valid for one year and renewable. A Guest Borrowers card allows the card holder to check out any circulating materials from any University Library for up to 14 days. Guest Borrowers may borrow up to 10 items excluding audio and video formats. To obtain a Guest Borrowers card visit any branch library or Waldo Library Access Services (circulation) desk with your identification.
